My First Award!

Well this is a nice surprise!

I honestly didn’t know there were awards and you could nominate fellow bloggers whom you think are deserving. So… this is it…

 

The Very Inspiring Blogger Award!

This wasn’t something I expected though. I started this blog out of a small interest of mine and I’ve been gaining readers as I go. Now, I recently received this nomination from a new friend and fellow blogger of the same interests, Swajithkas. I highly recommend you this blog as there is much to learn about proverbs, idioms and quotations.

1. I used to be bad at Maths in my early primary school years. (Now I’m studying Actuarial Science!)
2. I love theatre acting and I miss the stage.
3. A coffee addict. Needs a cup everyday,if possible.
4. Quite the grammar Nazi. I’d rather spell out ‘you’ than ‘u’ when texting.
5. Globophobia. Fear of balloons.
6. Have yet to learn to ride a bicycle.
7. Proverbs, idioms, phrases amuse me a lot.

Rumours are terrible. Yes, I do know that this isn’t something new. You’ve probably heard about this plenty of times but I just have to have my say in this as well.

We do it every day, without even realizing we are doing it. It slips out of our tongues just as easy as we compliment people even if we don’t mean it. It’s a habit, a bad one. One we should all try to reduce. Gossip a little less, talk less about that girl whom you think is trying to sabotage you, don’t tell everyone that the quiet guy at the corner is a weirdo even if he’s one.

I’m bringing up this because fling enough dirt and some will stick. When you attack an opponent repeatedly, some of the accusations will be believed.  It affects the first impression you would get when you actually meet this person that you were told about before. Chances are, that rumour you were told will stick with him under your impression. Now, wouldn’t that be such a downer if you were on the other end where you were being judged instead?

A similar proverb would be give a dog a bad name and hang him, in which, ruin someone’s reputation and they will never be able to re-establish themselves. Sounds harsher in that way, doesn’t it?

Then again…I guess it’s in our human nature to talk about anyone and everyone.

What Ought to be Common Sense

I recently came across these Six Candidate Ethical Principles in the syllabus of one of my business-related subjects I am taking and I thought it was worth sharing. I feel as if these principles ought to be given a thought as they are true. It would be nice if everyone would actually practice these principles.

They are somewhat similar in the sense that they all have the similar theme of being considerate of others. It’s really just the common sense of respecting others so that you would be respected as well.

These are the six principles;

Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.
– Golden Rule

If the action is not right for everyone to take, it is not right for anyone.
– Immanuel Kant’s Categorical Imperative

If the action cannot be taken repeatedly, it is not right to take at all.
– Descartes’ Rule of Change

Take the action that achieves the higher or greater value.
– Utilitarian Principle

Take the action that produces the least harm or least potential risks.
– Risk Aversion Principle

Assume that virtually all tangible and intangible objects are owned by someone unless there is a specific declaration otherwise.
– Ethical “No Free Lunch” Rule

The Utilitarian Principle is a very debatable topic about its effectiveness. You’ve probably heard about the situation of “Would you rather spare the life one very important person in the sacrifice of a million lives, or spare the million lives in the sacrifice of that one very important person?” I know this topic has been debated over and over again many times but everyone has their own opinion on which is better.

Now, what if the action with the highest value has the highest potential risk?

However, I do find the Golden Rule a very important one to live by. Even the littlest things you do for others will eventually have a good effect back at yourself. A little help goes a long way for someone else. It could be the highlight of someone’s day that you took the extra effort to help him or her.

As cliché as these may seem, you cannot deny that it is, in fact true.

A Year Has Passed

A little tiny too late but a very Happy New Year to you!

I hope you had fun bringing in 2015! It has been a good 2014 although I wished I could’ve achieved more that I wanted to (including updating this blog a little more often :P). Nevertheless, it was a good year!

I had recently ended an internship (thus, why this blog has been quiet lately) and I will be going back to classes. So I hope I can find the time to spare and fill up this blog with more posts. I do have quite some ideas to write but I just can’t sit myself down to type them out… Hmm… will have to work on that.

I have previously talked about a proverb Justin Timberlake sang about and another proverb here. Now, I’ve found a couple more similar proverbs. I’m talking about that What Comes Around, Goes Around song and also the Curses, like chickens, come home to roost proverb.

Three other similar proverbs that I have found are;

Do as you would be done by

Do unto others as you have them do unto you

Live and let live

The definition for the first two are very much the same, which is to treat others in the same way you would want them to treat you. The third proverb is to show the tolerance towards other you would expect them to show towards you.

The common theme among these five sayings can pretty much be summed up in one word; Karma. So overall, if you believe in karma, you can relate to these proverbs. Even if you don’t, well, you can still use on others. 🙂

Human’s Best Friend

This is just a thought of my own, I wouldn’t call it a solid one as everyone takes it differently but…

A man’s best friend is his dog,and

Diamonds are a girl’s best friend.

So what about human’s best friend?
Is there something or someone that both the male and female can agree on is their best friend in general?
Would it be a dog or diamonds?
(Yes, I know diamonds are a metaphorical phrase for being materialistic, but let’s look at what the phrase is saying on its own for awhile)
Or is it something else completely?

What is your take?

I’d like to put in my two cents and say that a human’s best friend would be their confidence.
Dogs will be loyal if you treat them right and diamonds can get you as far as money would buy you. However, I feel that with the right amount of confidence, it can be your best friend and help you when you need that extra boost to go that extra mile. I say right amount, because too much confidence would only destroy you in the long run. So having just enough confidence can be your best friend in life!

It has some of the most common Cantonese proverbs I’ve been hearing and also a lot which I have not come across.

廣府話小研究Cantonese Resources

阿塗(Ah To) , a graphic designer and part-time cartoonist who concerns about the survival of Cantonese in Canton and Hong Kong, has just published a comic called ” The Great Canton and Hong Kong Proverbs” on Hong Kong independent media “ Passion Times “. The cartoon contains illustrations of 81 Cantonese proverbs.

“The Great Canton and Hong Kong Proverbs”
In 1559, Dutch artist Pieter Bruegel created the oil painting “Netherlandish Proverbs” which illustrates many Dutch proverbs to praise the Dutch culture. In 2014, Ah To imitated the idea and created “Great Canton and Hong Kong proverbs” illustrating 81 Cantonese proverbs to propagate the Cantonese culture and defend Cantonese.
