Chances are, you’ve heard of what goes around comes around and never heard of curses, like chickens, come home to roost. And chances are you only know of the first proverb because Justin Timberlake sung about it. Am I right?
What goes around, goes around, goes around
Comes all the way back around
If you listen to the full lyrics properly, it actually describes the meaning of that proverb.
Should’ve known better when you came around
That you were gonna make me cry
It’s breaking my heart to watch you run around
‘Cause I know that you’re living a lie
It’s pretty much describing about JT falling in love with this woman and then she breaks his heart. She’s probably doing this to other men too. So now he’s saying that what you are doing (breaking people’s heart) will come back to affect you too. Hence what goes around comes around, also known as karma.
Now the second proverb, curses, like chickens, come home to roost is similar. It means speaking badly of someone will rebound ultimately to one’s own detriment. Pretty close to that woman JT was singing about.
Now you’ve probably learnt one new proverb!
And a new similarity!
